Default Superformance driveshaft

So I had a little wiggle in rear u-joint so I thought I'd replace it. After removing driveshaft and front u-joint - I realized the rear u-joint caps are pressed onto driveshaft without retainer rings and are non-serviceable. So how to source a replacement driveshaft? Or is there another solution? I attached pics of the numbers I see, but I can't find anything to match. I can't find the front u-joint as well based on the pic, but I figure I could just measure it to get that one.

Whatever gets pressed in can also get pressed out.

If that is an unacceptable alternative, a driveshaft shop can cut the rear universal joint casting off the drive shaft (you can, too, and save a little $ if you have a lathe). Replace the press-together version with a retainer clip version, and don't worry—be happy.

And if you're looking for a shop that can handle that little chore I would recommend Machine Service, Inc, in Green Bay. They did mine. https://www.machineservice.com/

I recollect back in the good old days when I used to know how to use a vise and a couple sockets, pressing old u-joints out and new u-joints into place quite frequently.

If the vise and sockets didn't do the trick on old rusty joints, a little swat with a ballpeen hammer on the side of the drive shaft would break them loose.

Of course I also recollect the cars I drove were barely worth more than a set of new u-joints to begin with . . .

Is that possibly an internal clip u joint for the driveshaft side?
You can’t see from pictures…

It's been a while, but I had my Galaxies driveshaft U-joints replaced and shaft balanced at Dick's Drive Shaft Exchange on Washington in Phoenix.

I was still curious about your u-joints so I am still trying to see if I can find PNs. They should be a pretty standard part.

John, it's SQUEEEEEZE on out, one end a a time. As Chuck said, a couple sockets and a hefty vise with do the trick in lieu of a hydraulic press. Smaller socket to match the diameter of the joint's cap and the larger one big enough for the cap to clear it's insides as you press.

Looks like an internal clip, it’s hard to see on my IPhone
The open end of clip is shown
Definitely check

I thought inside clip as well, but there's none that I can see. I don't have a big enough vise, but I banged it pretty good with said sockets with no progress. I tried a ball joint press with no luck. Almost seems the caps are pressed into a seat. I'll try Dick's Driveshaft mentioned and get it done right.

John, see if the shop will let you watch so you'll know if there's a next time.

If you need a back-up to Dick's Driveshaft...Arizona Driveshaft in Mesa on Southern Ave does great work as well.

Best of luck

So it was an inside clip. Feel like an idiot. Simply could not pull it out - could not see open end. Dick's is now https://phoenixrackandaxle.com/ and they replaced both u-joints then balanced. Happy again.
DanEC and JTMCOBRA like this.

John, glad you got fixed up just in time for the Picnic on 04/06. Also, are you going on the RT 66 Fun Run this year. 05/03-05?

Put the HEAT to it ? Maybe it is the GM nylon injection retaining system?
