Steering rubbing

Hi All,

I'm just doing the final install of my steering. With the front wheels off the ground and going through the steering range of motion there is a very slight rubbing feeling when the uni moves through a particular angle.

Should it be 100% smooth or is it normal to feel a little bit of binding? I've never really moved a factory car like this so not sure how it should be. Don't know if I'm being too anal or if the uni's are binding.

It should be smooth the unit could be binding at that angle so may need machining to ensure clearance

Make sure all the uni joints in the shaft are in phase with each other. Having one out of phase can cause a tight spot.

At full droop, the angle of the inner tie rod ends can feel a bit stiff, like they're binding. Raise the front wheels an inch or two and check it again. If it's still not smooth, you should try to figure out why.

Thanks guys. Uni's are in phase, but I might try playing around with rotating a tooth at a time. Also going to measure the movement to see if the speed is changing much.

Good point bob, I haven't tried it on the ground. Will give it a try.

Zed, try disconnecting the tie rods from the steering arms. If the binding is still there its in the uni's or the rack.

The uni's on these things operate at a pretty sharp angle so its a good bet the issue is in there.
