Default Planning future trip

Ok Guys & Gals.
It looks like I will be taking long service in 2017.
I will have 3-4 months off and access to very cheap plane tickets.

I want to start piecing together a holiday.
What are some must see events in the Northern Hemisphere.
I also want to sneak in a NASCAR event at some stage.

I will be putting it all on a spreadsheet to work out a route/roster.
So please list any events you know that will be happening.

Goodwood (Festival of speed and Revival) will be on the list.

If you are going to Goodwood, then you can go to Germany to the Nurburgring. Thats a experience for sure.

Nascar, try not a 1.5 mile race, but Bristol, Daytona, Talledega, Darlington, Richmond. Also a factory tour (HMS).

Hockey (Ice), I cant get enough of it, its fast and tough, try to get to a NHL game.

Alaska Cruise, Baltic sea cruise (this will take you to places that you will most likely never normally get to).

4th of July in the USA.

Bobsled experience at Lake Placid.

Titan Missile Museum.

Get drunk in Ireland on nothing but Guiness.

Route 66, all of it and the old road (as much as you can), not the interstates. Allow two weeks for this at least.

Try the 72oz steak challenge at The Big Texan, in .... err... Texas.

Stay in a Tuscan villa in the middle of a vinyard in Tuscany. Enjoy the wine and fresh pressed olive oil.

European alps and the tunnels through mountains that go for 10+ k's

Thease are just some things that come to mind as a starting point.

The Monterey Speed Week takes place in early August each year. It has so many events it's just impossible to get to them all but there is something for every enthusiast. The historic races at Laguna Seca are unbelievable. Fields of 30-40 Can-Am or Trans-Am cars, etc, etc. Pebble Beach the same weekend can be expensive ($300 entry in 2011) but if it's on your bucket list then do it. This then gives you 4-5 week to get to Goodwood.

This is the 2015 site: Monterey Car Week, Monterey, California, your only source for complete events schedules and local information.

The Moto GP is at Laguna Seca a week or two before Speed Week so if you want to see Jack Miller fall off you could include that. You might also want to check what's happening in Baja racing around that time - if I recall you have an interest there.

Do you need someone to carry your bags?

Rent a (narrow) convertible and drive around Lake Como for a week.

Visit Shelby America in Las Vegas.

Con a US Ford dealer to give you a test drive in the latest GT500 Shelby Mustang! ("We can't get them in Australia - will you ship one fir me?")

Cuba. Nothing newer than 1959 on the road there. And they're still on the road! You'll spend a month there Dave!

One thing I have learnt over the years is try not to do too much without a break. It is such a logistical and costly exercise for us that many Aussies try to cram in too much. If it's LSL then you can extend the overall time. Plan to take 2-3 days out, each 14 or so just to chill out. If you become tired the enjoyment can be lost.

Jaydee, I was fortunate to see Discovery STS-119 launch in 2009, the experience was just awesome as nothing else compares to it. The launch was delayed a number of times and time was running out for us, but then finally all things were right and it was just incredible.

It is astonishing that the worlds biggest firecracker attached to a glider that leaves earths atmosphere, delivers supplies, equipment and a pizza to a space station and then can return to earth......amazing

Yep.

And Shelby stopped making Cobras in '67.

So maybe in the future NASA will relaunch real original shuttles again.

If you're in the Lake Como area, head up towards Switzerland and do the San Bernardino Pass, Julier Pass and the Stelvio Pass. Stelvio is only open after early June because of its height (9k ft)....but it's worth it.
Maranello and the Ferrari museum is worth it, as is the Maserati factory in nearby Modena.

Cheers,
Glen

Hi Dave,

We just returned from the east coast USA last Thursday. Done an Autumn colour cruise from New York to Quebec up through Rhode Is, Boston, Portland in Maine, New Brunswick & Nova Scotia Then took a 5 day coach trip around the south east of Canada to Montreal, Montebello, Ottawa, Toronto and Niagara Falls. Then spent a week in Detroit, a place I would recommend to you. Visited the Ford and Gilmore car museums and dropped in to see Les and Sef in their Detroit Pawn shop. While we were there, bumped into Fletch from 'Classic Restos' who was doing a segment for his program on TVS. Then had a week in Waikiki. Recommend the 1 hour round Oahu helo ride, the Waikiki Sunset Cruise, Pearl Harbour and the Polynesian Cultural Centre. Hope this helps.

If you hit the West Coast and want a good place for "down time" and close to Monterey, Pebble Beach etc this place is most excellent!

Alaska is pretty amazing but, you'll need at least a month for that! We spent a week driving up there & saw only a sliver of it. Quite amazing, though! A lot of great ideas posted above. Seeing Los Angeles & New York City can be thrilling. Tons to do in both places. Grand Canyon, New England, Utah. I haven't spent a lot of time in Europe(would love spend more!) but Prague was a lot of fun. It's the only major city that hasn't been destroyed by wars.

Timing is most likely to be July, August September.
Carlisle Chrysler is generally first weekend in July and Goodwood revival is generally second weekend in September.
So it will be everything in between I look to fill.
