LSA cam swap in an LS3
Ive had to take my stage 2 Crow Cam out of my LS3 to get it past emissions testing in Australia.
The motor is near new, has run less than a couple of hours during commissioning of the electrics.
I have access to a loan LSA cam, that is from a near new motor also.
Would look forward to advice on the compatibility of the specs on these cams and the suitability to run the LSA cam with a Rollmaster CS1195 double row timing chain / sprocket set in my LS3.
Had posted the above on LS1 tech but no responses.. look forward to any local advice that may be available..
With thanks
Chris

I'd be thinking that given the price and time that is involved to have an emissions test done in NSW that you should get hold of the correct cam for your engine to have the testing done. Surely there are stock LS3 cams sitting under workbenches all over the place.
From what I have heard passing is hard enough as it is, let alone trying to get something unknown to work.

I'm sure if you posted a wanted-to-buy here for a stock LS3 cam you would not have a problem finding one.

Check the number of bolts holding the gear on the cam.....
Your double row timing chain won't fit your standard GM cam..... unless the LSA run an aftermarket cam, which I highly doubt.
Plenty of performance shops should have a standard cam and timing chain etc lying around. They can't be reused with an aftermarket cam change.

Chris, Why would you modify the motor before putting the car through emissions testing? Your best bet would have been to leave it stock till you got over all the hurdles.
An LSA cam might not be the best choice either. The LSA motor is supercharged and a blown motor usually has quite a different profile to a naturally aspirated motor. Supercharged motors are often run more exhaust duration to help empty the cylinders. Filling them is no problem as the mixture is forced in. There is no guarantee the motor will pass emissions with that cam.
Find the stock cam and run with that.
Cheers

The NSW emissions test used to be free? Is it not anymore?

The test might be, but the time and energy that it takes isn't.

I have a standard L98 camshaft you can have for the cost of the freight. It is a factory one bolt Cam so you would need a factory timing chain and gears. (Sorry.... I threw them out) Private message me if you want it.
Yes the L98 cam will fit and work, it's just not as big as the LS3 cam so in theory would represent better emissions....???

You could give VCM/Autotechnique a call. They do a LOT of cam installs on LS motors. They will definitely have spare OEM LS3 cams lying around. They probably send them off to the scrap metal recyclers!

hi Mike...
Good question... aside from my ignorance at the time.. Denner recommended it, advising it would be fine.. !

thanks Tow..
PM sent.
The double row cam sprocket seems to be able to take a three OR one bolt configuration.. I cant seem to load the pic.. is in my build thread.. Coupe 65 in Sydney Australia.
Cheers

I agree...
A LSA cam in a NA LS3 quite probably will produce less HP than the stock LS3 cam. Do a bit of research if you don't believe us.

I believe.. I believe.. honest..
Its a temporary install to get past emissions only.. Id posted on LS1 Tech.. hoping for the technical data to confirm the specs at least, but no replies at this stage. Am chasing a standard cam, but it seems I need to change the timing gear as well.. again.. ! As they say in the Yellow Pages add, '.. not a happy Jam'.. lol

The solution.... for those that may receive bad advice in the future or be as ignorant as I was at the time.. .
Had the car at Track and Street.. Neil checked up with his cam guy this morning and based on the timing chain and gears I had already, threw a near new 3 bolt 5.7L cam in the engine, at what must have been light speed..
Its starts and runs nicely.. the oil was apparently very dark with excess fuel, but should clear up and for some reason there was a lot of slag or debris in the sump. Have no idea how, whether it was like that from GM or something that Denner could have done, but in his usual through and precise way, Neil fixed it and kept on going.. .
Cheers
Chris
