Default Engine choice

OK

I'm still looking at several BDR's and was wondering what is the best engine choice.

Ford Racing 302, 351w, 408 stroker , 427 Stroker or big block

I'm looking for power, roar and reliability.

You should be able to find a 302 or 351W car under 40k about 5-7 years old. If you have a few extra bills under the bed, this one will list soon:

$42k

My PM box is almost always full... here are the details.

Car #700 was originally assembled in FL. Monterey Red with Ghost Stripes (lighter). Interior is tan with embroidery denoting it is car #700. Engine is a Roush 427SR. It has 9,000 or so miles on it. Tan Cloth Soft Top. 17" Knock Off Wheels. 1965 Title/Registration. Engine was leaking from back of block so we have that completely out to service entire car. Oil got on clutch of course so that will be new as well. A few chips and scratches from 9,000 miles and some dull spots that should buff out (we are not at detail stage yet).

We don't usually have consignments in this price range but the owner needs to move on. We priced aggressively due to the color, miles, and the owner has a loan so it has to be bought out through the bank etc. to get the title so for that "hassle" and rework $42k is the number.

There's no perfect answer to this question. But, I think the best bang for the buck for a street car will come from a well built 408W. When you start comparing other engines, you won't see the same $/hp numbers.

No matter what engine you choose, be vary careful about who built it, and what components they use. Companies like Fortes Parts and Lykins Motorsports have had an excellent reputation for many years.

Other companies, not so much. They use cheap parts - like Pro-Comp. Or use mismatched parts. Their assembly techniques are not that good. And/or, their after sales support stinks.

As you're looking at the engine, as where it came from, and then do your research on that particular company or builder. Also, ask exactly what components were used, and research those particular components.

If you go 427 Windsor, make sure it's has an aftermarket block such as Dart, etc.

Default Need a little more info

Genolan Need some info on the other parts of the drive train. 4spd,5spd,6pd, auto? Rearend ratio? size of tires? What are you looking for in this car? Shows, cruising, autocross and road racing? Picking a motor is like picking a woman. For the motor, what rpm are you looking to turn? Silly power and nasty, a 408-427 stroker. What material do you want the motor of? Aluminum or Iron. Weight savings of about 50-100 pounds on the front end. If you can help with some of these question we can narrow down the beast. Rick L. After this we can also narrow down the better machine shops and builders for your motor. What clutch are you looking at? This relates to how much power. Over build the car is the best thing to offer you for advice.

1) The seller is listing a car with a price range?
3) Ford Racing has never sold a 408 nor have they ever used Dart blocks, so that's a "deal".

Make sure that engine was not build by "Wheeler" for Speed Fanatix. That's all I will offer on that.
