Lost power

Was enjoying my ride home tonight almost as much as my ride into work this morning, when all of the sudden the red light on the dash comes on, I lose power, and coast to the shoulder. Do an inspection, wait a few minutes, fire back up and head the last few miles home. Try to blow the the horn at the mechanic that stopped to help, and nothing. By the time I get home the horn starts working, so It sounds like a short, but when I fired it back up, it made a noise like a sparking issue. Thoughts?
