Backdraft
Looking at a 2008 build Backdraft. The metal tag says "hand built" ,South Africa.
Is that correct? Are they manufactured in South Africa.

They are indeed hand-built to order in Durban, South Africa by TR-Tec ( Backdraft Racing) and shipped without wheels, engine and gearbox all around the world. They sent me weekly photos for my build-log at New BDR RT3 Factory-build Log .

I just recently purchased a 2008 backdraft.
As stated above they are built in South Africa.
Mine has a little over 9k miles on it and still looks and runs great.
The "shakedown" period was done by the other owners :-)
It needs very little and most things that I want done are to my taste and not because of the build.
I have chassis #368

Hi lakercobra and lomdel,
Under what title are these shipped to the states? (Vintage? Replica?,Kit Car?)
If they were actually manufactured in say 2018 in South Africa, how can the be registered in the US, as a 1965 Shelby or similar??
Does anyone else have an idea?
Thanks

I'm just guessing but I'm thinking since final assembly of the car occurs in the US that is the country of origin for title.
Much like Superformance also made in SA, Dodge trucks made in Mexico, Chevys made in Canada.

The "year and make" of registration depends on the state. Some states register as "year/model" replicated, others like NY are current model year and "Composite" (or in some states "homemade"). See SEMA Action Network (SAN) TAG_TITLE_TOOLBOX for the regulations in all US states.
Some people go to lengths and often contravene the DMV law to get a "1965 cobra" or such. At one point it was common to take a junked '65 Ford title and put the VIN on the new chassis. All of the "work arounds" are of questionable legality and in some state have caused tax assessments, seizures and other not so good things.

AZ Title
Just had my Backdraft inspected by ADOT and registered/ titled in AZ. They assigned a AZ VIN number and placed a sticker next to the factory VIN and titled it as a 1965 Ford, Special Construction. They said the only ones getting the 1965 Cobra title are the ones with a CSX VIN. Best thing is the insurance company said they must match the title so it is insured with an agreed to value with 1965 vehicle rates.
