Default Gas cap orientation

I've seen the gas cap positioned front to back on some builds (hinge at the rear) and sideways on other builds such as my BDR (hinge towards the drivers side). If I wanted to rotate my cap 90 degrees such that its front to back, is it just a simple matter removing the mounting screws and rotating the cap? Is one position more 'authentic' than the other?

Here are four (five) original cars worth of pictures for what its worth. 3020, 3010, 3018 and 3021.....
3050 pics are in this site too which shows the position, I just could not repost. (same as these four BTW)
Again remember all these cars were restored so all bets off as to day one........ However they are all the same, likelyhood/chances are this is correct.

The age old question of which direction it should be. I personally say choose your own way because it is your car. I had mine open towards the trunk but that is mean and I wanted it straightforward. Not sure which way the originals has it and would not be surprised if Shelby had it in all sorts of directions because they did that with paint as well.

If the hinge were placed towards the outside of the car, the door would be in the way of the guy fueling the car. The whole idea is speed, so the hinge would basically be oriented towards the middle of the car.

I have also seen several originals clocked at a 45 degree position, probably for that same reason. In other words, half way between to the side and to the rear.

Keep in mind if it is not an S/C or a Comp car it was not original equipment to use a LeMans cap, original or not. Larry is correct!
Of course we can all do what we want as we own the cars....
