Default New York Safety asking for side marker lights?

Hi,

Trying to register my Cobra in NY and the Safety Department is asking me to put front side marker lights and rear side marker lights? Any suggestions?

Front side AND rear side marker lights? Is that a requirement on new vehicles in NY?
It does sound excessive, however I'm in Australia, so I can't comment with any authority . I have to provide one side marker light here.

Cheers,
Glen

Honestly, as long as you put a DOT compliant tiny LED, you would not even notice it?

How many people work at that Safety Department? I found when I had to deal with our County Building Department, if I got turned down by one person, I would go back, sometimes two or three more times, and I would finally get approval. Cheers, Dennis

Put "N/A" for both on the form. We have never had any "Cobra style" car denied because of it.

The safety inspection people here started by telling me I needed to install side marker lamps, but my car has beehive-style tail lamps and matching front lamps - which the inspectors here accepted as they're visible from the side. Do they meet the viewing angles as defined in DOT specifications? Unlikely, but they were still accepted.

I also had to install reflectors visible from the side, but was able to source 2" x 3.5" self-adhesive mylar reflectors that are attached to the side of the bumperettes - amber in front and red in rear. They look like this:

If my car had rectangular tail lamps and/or lower profile front lamps then the discussion likely would have been somewhat different.

Hi Mark,

I put N/A on the form but the inspector still ask for it. On the check list he indicated anything built after 1976 requires marker lights. Car was built 1992, should I challenge the inspector on the matter?

When you say "inspector' are you talking about the Albany Vehicle Safety people? If so, please PM or email me and I will give you what you can do.

This is odd. I just registered my Superformance in April. This subject never came up. However, one gentleman in Albany was quite concerned that my turn signal bulbs be a different color than the lenses. Clear lense w amber bulb up front and red lenses with clear bulbs in the rear.
