Should be a noticeable improvement.
If people saw what kind of airflow these engines actually needed, they'd poop their pants. The little S&H air cleaners will choke a motor quicker than anything else.

David,
Very cool solution! Mind divulging who made the offset bases??
That is the secret.
My secret was much more crude but worked-like a sawed-off shotgun...off-set center posts. That and a flat-bottom air pan eliminated the problem for me:

I like it.
Had thought of doing a similar thing when Brent told me the S&Hs would limit my engine.
Mind you yours turned out better than what my tiny mind pictured.
So I might steel your idea if you don't mind.

Kudos, 601HP! And your 'blank' valve covers look great, too.
Chas, I never knew about your retrofit. Very cool!
You guys really went the extra effort.
Is it just my imagination or are those Quickfuels an even tighter squeeze?!?!

Thanks for the kudos!
The source for the base plates and top plates is:
universalspinners.com
his email is universalspinners@bellnet.ca
416-299-4009
Mike runs the business and is a gearhead. His was the first I found on the internet and he's in Toronto. There are certainly others offering the same product, however Mike was very accommodating.
The Quick Fuels are a little closer-spaced than the Holleys.
I posted this so anyone could consider a similar set-up.
You've certainly noticed I cut 3/4" dia. holes in each base plate to allow the float adjusters to poke into the air filter space. The bottom of the air filter has to be clearanced a little where they sit on the adjusters. A Dremel tool with the sanding drum works nicely for relieving the filter's rubber area.
The spun aluminum top ring is attached to the K&N top filter with clear silicone caulk. I ran 2 lines of the caulk around each top filter and laid the new top ring on the top filter.
Here's my modification for the center all-thread. I put a 6" piece of all-thread in a brake-line tubing bender, made 2 bends to create the 3/8" offset, and then cut to length. I leaned north and south, compared to Charles' north and west offsets.

Those spun bases are the t!ts.
Neatly done. I got around that by flanging (like a bellmouth) the flat pan to the 5 1/8" Holley throats. Raises the plate to just rest on the adjuster nuts. Seals the pan completely to the throats.
My elements are RTV'd to the base and when the tops are unscrewed, just lifting the pan off brings the elements with it-simple.
I made the center studs with aluminum tubing so the tube acts as a stop when tightening the wingnuts on top. Had to play some to get just the right height for tension.

I have so little vertical clearance that I was forced to position the base plate as shown. Another less sightly option required a 10# sledge hammer.

Very nice. Yes, Brent is right in that these engines need a lot more air then is normally provided to them. I only have one carb, but it is equipped with an oversized K&N top filter. Mine looks like Chas' with the black finish, but I like 601hp's better with the chrome finish.

Saturday afternoon I drove with these new air filters for the first time. Was out for 60 some miles. Approx. 80% of those miles were on county two lane roads. The other 20% was some in-town driving.
The engine is breathing more freely. In the past I've typically tended to jet toward the rich side, and the plugs coloring before the filter change was chocolate.
The current plugs coloring after driving with the new set-up is a light gray and is what I hoped for. I'll leave the jets alone.
