427 S/C - What's the Difference?

Cobra Guru's...

I'm interested in building a replica 66 427 S/C AC Cobra. I have an original 427 side oiler engine, intake, set of 4-barrels carbs and a few other components. I'd like to keep the car as close to an original 66 as possible, with minor enhancements.

What are the key differentiators between the more widely known replica manufactures like ERA, Superformance vs. small town builders like Antique Collectible & Auto Inc. out of Buffalo, NY?

What should someone pay to have a high quality replica 427 S/C built?

That's one way to start a debate.

All kidding aside.. there are several makes out there but if you want originality there are two choices. Kirkham and Shelby.

You asked..."What's the Difference?" There are many values of Cobra. For me there is a major visual difference between a SPF and an ERA with the ERA being the closest to "Real", but so is the Unique, MidStates and a few more and of course the Contemporary. The one still available on the board currently is a major value and a highly accurate replica. I would be picking that one up if I only had a job.

If you want to keep total originality there are two choices... Kirkham and Shelby. Frankly, I'd personally choose the Kirkham if money wasn't a consideration. But you can get a fine and highly accurate Cobra replica for about half the cost by purchasing a fully finished Cobra used. When my finances turn around you bet I'll buy used. The cars are generally better sorted out and right, but you'll have to watch out for that. Caveat Emptor.

It would not be out of the question for a builder to charge $50 hr. for the approximately 100 hours to effect a build from a kit. Figure $5,000. But each manufacturer builds finished rollers without engine and transmission which will actually be a better deal for the most part, and most will install your engine and trans for a small up in charges. There are many ways of skinning the dollar on building a snake.
