Tire Sizes
I need a set of new tires on my recently bought Cobra. looking for some RWL or making a set of Goodyear billboards. Looking at the Avon tires. So two questions.
1. The tires on the car now are 215/65/15 in front and 275/60/15 in rear. Car has coil overs, IRS inboard in rear. What the largest tire size I can go front and rear? Also first car with knock offs, anything I need to be concerned about with a tire shop mounting tires?
2. Best stencil kit to replicate the billboard tires?
Thanks for any information or tire recommendations!
Pat

Cooper Cobra's are todays choice for your Contemporary:
235/60/15 for the front
295/50/15 for the rear
Forget about the stencils, just leave the blackwall out and be done with it.

Avons. Don't do billboards. Much discussion about them here.

If you use AVON's or any sticky tire (you ought to do this no matter what tire) be sure to protect the exposed fiberglass in your inner fenderwells or you will get stones thrown off by the tire crazing the surface paint as they impact the underside of the fender. The fix at that point is pricey.

Any suggestions on protection for the inner fenders?

Wasn’t going to do Billboards but replicate the stenciling on some good sticky street tires.

I believe Kirkham sold a pretty nice protective filler for the inner fender wells. If I remember correctly it was sticky on one side, made of relatively dense rubber with a non-porous outer surface.
Kirkham did not make it but rather sold an over the counter product that worked pretty well for our cars. I would give them a call. I suspect they still sell it.

Unless you plan to road race the car, forget about the Avon tires. You won't use 6/10ths of their sticky side on the street, stick with the Cooper Cobras.
If you plan to road race or autocross the car on a regular basis, then go with the Avons.

I went with the Avons and I could not be happier. Expensive, but worth it. I am running 295/50R15 and 245/60R15.

I believe ERA uses an asphalt based automotive undercoating. It is better than wax based. I don't know their preferred brand but imagine it would be something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Approved-Brus.../dp/B002HOG28G

#1 asked an answered
#2 is "ego fluff" that I do not deal with, sorry.
#3 is simple, a good spray in truck bed liner material works well under most circumstances.

Thanks everyone. I’ll look at the Avon and Cooper Cobras. I know Coppers are easy to find, the Avons seem to be harder to find in these sizes. Not going to race but like to have the best quality tire under this car.

Don't let my current location trick you.....For your neck of the woods, around Bear Mountain, and up in to the Catskills, and even the back roads westward towards Ithaca/Syracuse/Watkins Glen and various lakes, the Cooper Cobras will be far more tire than you will ever need. Headed out to 95/87/287, the same.

Cooper Cobras or M/T ST
Last summer I bought four M/T ST tires. I posted this single post thread on mounting tips should you have pin drive wheels or large brakes Mounting & Balancing New Mickey Thompsons on Pin Drive Wheels
Now, I have been told the Cooper Cobras and M/T ST tires are really the same. I have also been told that the rubber is slightly different and that M/T rubber is more suitable for a 2500 lb. high horsepower car. You can find those threads and posts on CC pretty easily with a search. Maybe it's BS; I don't really know for sure. In the limited driving time I've had I do like the M/T ST tires and I do a bit of high spirited driving. But, I'm not Morris and I don't need Avons. In fact, every year I get closer to 70 I seem to hit 70 in the Cobra less often (not counting interestate driving). You will enjoy the Cooper Cobras or M/T STs. They are really a nice tire for the "high spirited," but not big-time racer, Cobra owner.
