Default My Engine Is Almost Famous

I just got my engine back from Barry at Survival and I am very pleased with how it came out. During the build process, Barry asked me if it would be OK if an online Engine magazine did an article on the project which I agreed to.

Barry was kind enough to send me the link to the article today so I thought I would share. The dyno video takes a little while to get exciting but it is worth the wait to hear it rev...

Awesome... & congrats

550hp/tq seems like the perfect build for a street going cobra
Any reason you/(Barry) didn't go with a bit more cam?

That is a very nice engine and you should have a fun time with it in your Cobra. It should be pretty good on the street and do well if you track the car. Congratulations.

Hi Dimiss,

I really let Barry make the decision on the cam specs. after telling him what I was looking for in an engine. I don't plan on doing any heavy duty racing otherwise this would be a completely different engine. I was looking for a great cruising engine that looked old school with plenty of torque that would not be temperamental, prone to overheat or not run well at low RPMS (I am running a TKO600 5 Speed). Someone is always going to spend more money, have more horsepower or more torque and I wasn't going to start playing that game.

Although I haven't had a chance to experience the engine in the car, it seems like I got exactly what I was looking for.

This has a LOT more power than the 428 I had in my previously Contemporary Cobra and I was pretty happy with how that car moved.

Just a note, I had the LeMans bowl too, but changed them out. Seems they can be prone to sticking needle valves. Got home from a drive and found fuel pooling on top of the hot intake manifold. Fuel was pumping out of the carburetor vent pipe.

I don't remember the reason why their geometry is sensitive to sticking, it was 10 years ago.

Hi Dave - thanks for the heads up on that, I will keep an eye out. I bought these bowls new from Carl's Ford Parts and had them installed on a Holley 850 DP that has been dehorned, dechoked and replated. Joe Bunetic did all of the work including dialing in the bowls and installing new needle valves. Hopefully I will not run into this problem. I was also able to find better flowing NPT fittings.
