Best Ignition System?
What would be the best ignition system. I currently have an older msd on my fe, but would like opinions on this, for reliability. The car will be street driven, with less than 500 miles a year.

For reliability and easy diagnoses and cheap repairs, I use points and a accell 140001 coil.

The Crane HI-6 or HI-6R with a Crane LX-92 coil. I've had only one unit on my Cobra for almost 15 years and 95,000 miles. No issues at all. Has a dial style rev limit system and a helpful tach accuracy setting. Found my Smiths tach is off at the 1000 rpm. setting by almost 200 rpm. Powered me to 10,60 at 129 mph. Should work for you.

You need to define best. IMO, best is what I am using, a multi coil distributorless. Most power and most reliable, however, probably not a popular choice around here.

Fords Dura Spark....MSD was based on the Dura Spark! Rebuilt units are inexpensive anspd can be recurved. Are you looking for a Vac Advance or Mech unit?

I took out entire MSD system and put in a Pertronix. A nice polished dizzy with everything I think I need. The spark difference was amazing!

Best to buy,,,,
talos If money is no issue, ICE makes one of the best now. Problem is if you ever need parts. Why not stay with the MSD system. IF it works, leave it in there. I have 20 years on my system. The only failure is the distributor cap center falling out. I carry spares of cap and rotor. Some guys run metal centers for the cap instead of a carbon pile.
If you are looking to go cheap, go back to points and condensor with a vacuum setup and a good oil filled coil. They have been using this system for more than 50 years. Only side note, mount the coil in a horizontial mount and to a fender instead of the head or manifold. Vibration causes overheating and possible foaming of the oil inside the coil.
Follow the KISS rule, Keep It Simple Silly. Rick L.

I'm with Rick. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I've had my MSD system for 15 years and replaced one pick up, one rotor and one cap. I replace the points, condenser, cap and rotor in my Flathead every other year............

I have the MSD and it's been fine. I use their upgraded coil (I think it's called E type), which they said is more reliable and produces a hotter spark, and I mounted it on the inside of the fender for the same reason Rick mentioned.

I see that you have made some posts on the Originality Forum so if that is what you are interested in, this is what I did. I purchased a correct date coded dual point distributor that needed a rebuild and sent it out to be refurbished, curved and had the Pertronix module installed. Looks correct, gives you electronic ignition with rev limiting and you don't need to find a place to mount the MSD box. Send me a PM if you want more details.

Nice Job! As I said before, I was amazed at the Pertronix spark and the simplicity of the system.
