Default Comp Cam 282S ....Any users???

Hi
It's getting near the time to make a cam selection. Are there any user's of the Comp Cam 282S Magnum solid camshaft ?????
Here's what I have :
390FE +.040
Forged pistons, flat, 9.5 - 10.0 comp.???
C8AE-H Heads, 2.03 int., Ported and polished.
Edelbrock RPM Performer
Speed Demon 750
MSD ignition
Stock crank w/ C7AE-B rods
C4 750hp Full manual automatic
Torque converter - unknown at this time
Corvette C4 IRS w/ 3.07 gears, how about 3.54 or 3.75 ????
I want a SOLID cam, a little adjustment now and then is no problem.
I'm I asking too much for 400-425 horses ?????
This will be a street thummmmmper, may be a few trips down the strip.
Am I on track with this built till a 427 comes into my life?????
Thanks
Dave

Default Comp Cams 282S

Yes Sir!, That is the same camshaft that was reccommended to me by the Fellas at Comp Cams.I phoned their toll free number and told them that I had a F.E 427 .017 Over,10:1 Comp,Edelbrock Alum heads mildly ported,TWM 58mm DFI,TKO 600 RR Trans with a 3:31 Jag rear gears. I was looking for mostly street use with an occasional Rip down the track with that "Rumbly" Idle sound ( As if the side exhaust needs any help),Solid Lifter Camshaft that doen`t require constant adjustment, and about a 6500RPM limit. They said that this one will do nicely!.In my opinion - this camshaft will work well in your 390 as well. Go ahead and call the Help line for some advice, they will plug your parameters into their camshaft selection "Calculator" and presto....Theres your ideal cam. Take care..Mike

I ran the same exact cam on my last Cobra with a 428 and ported iron heads like yours and around 10.0 compresion. Mildly rough idle but not too rough. The 282S may sound a little more radical in your 390 than it did in my 428. If you are running this in a replica Cobra with an automatic trans and you plan to drive this car on the freeway at all, 3.70 gears are pretty low for such a light car. You could get away with 3.31s easy with that cam and still launch pretty well. How tall are your rear tires gonig to be and what stall speed are you planning to run for your converter?

Hey guys thanks for the replies.
Right now the rear has 3.07 gears stock and the tires are 305/50-15's.
Torque converter has not been chosen let. Stall speed selection depends on cam and cam selection depends stall speed. Hummmmmmmm. Need to get the two to work together.
Thanks
Dave

Maybe you can try the 3.07s before you switch it. First gear will be like a slingshot. In fact, my last car had 3.08s in it too. A lot of guys run 3.07/3.08 with the FEs because the have the torque to pull it through first gear and lower gears tend to shred the rear tires anyhow. Part of it also depends on how heavy your cars final weight will be?. A 2000lb Cobra is much different than a 27000lb Cobra. Many of us have found out our cars are much heavier than we first thought. Those 305s are pretty tall too. If you search around on CC, you'll find bits of discussion about many big block replica cars going back to taller gears now days. Hmmmm is right.

Does your automatic have an overdrive gear?

It would be worth your time to call a couple of reputable cam manufacturers, like comp cams, lunati, crane, etc., and see what they recommend for your application. The right cam can make all the difference in the world.

That is the same cam I plan on putting in my 427 S.O. when I get it finished this winter. Also plan on running mechanical roller lifters and dual springs to go with my Sig Erson roller rockers. Looking at 11.50 : 1 compression. I am rinning 3.50 rear gears.

Hi,

I'm just putting that cam in my 390 (bored to 400ci) based on Georges (Guessford) suggestion. I basically asked for a cam that would give a good performance on the street and he said that would be best and its his most popular cam.

I can give you some feedback once my engine is finished. It will be on a 3.31 diff and Toploader CR with 275/60R15s so that would give you a good idea hopefully. I'm not expecting any problems.

Paul

Dave,

What HP is that C4 Vette rear end rated for? Do you know the width hub-to-hub? Do you know how narrow they will go?

Hi Brian,
Not sure HP rating on rear. It's a Dana 36 unit. It's certainly not a drag strip rear. Right now it has 3.07 gears and I'm using Ford C4 HP manual shift automatic transmission. Would be better if it was Dana 44 unit. I can measure hub-to-hub. Don't forget rear composite transverse spring.
I'll post another message soon.
Dave

425 Horse No Problem. Had that cam in my ERA 390 +.030 Edelbrock Performer Intake,650 DP, Edelbrock heads milled .040, 76cc to 68cc CR 10.12:1 353 rear, Comp roller rockers GREAT SOUND AT IDLE. Just make sure to use end supports on your rocker arm shafts. The added spring pressure for the solids will cause a problem. I never beat on the motor still broke two shafts, wasn't just me either have friends with 427's and 428's same thing. Before I sold the car had new shafts and end supports installed, didn't want the new owner to get that sinking feeling.

I had the Comp Cam 282S in my last engine ..Liked it very much.. BUT thinking MORE IS BETTER I put a Comp Cam 294S in my new 427 engine and I DON"T like it as much...The 282 started at about 2000rpm and the 294 starts at about 2500 ..In Overdrive I'm turning less than that at 65mph ...The 282S seemed to have more torque on bottom also...I wish I had used the 282S in this one...Just my opinion..Steve McD
