Not a Cobra but Ford powered!
I realize this is not a Cobra project but it has been a challenge to say the least!
I had a Cobra client recommend my shop to a friend that wanted to have a Jaguar XKE roadster, with a twist. He wanted to have a XKE with all the typical Jaguar shortcomings. Oh yeah, he didn’t have a XKE to work with so that was the first challenge. We located a 1968 XKE that was very complete and best of all the tub was free of rust and damage. It also had a matching numbers drivetrain but that wasn’t an issue as everything but the differential, which is essentially the same unit found in Cobras was up to the challenge. The challenge was to replace the drivetrain with a V8 and a 5-speed transmission, replace the vehicles wiring harness, install a EFI fuel system, install a performance brake package and suspension package. Oh yeah, he wanted air conditioning and a modern infotainment system. Oh yeah, make the outside appear as original!
Here is what we are installing as the drivetrain option, unfortunately we were very limited on our engine options because of the pandemic, we decided on a Ford Motorsport BOSS 351 package that was bored and stroked to 460”, we also chose one of the new Tremec TKX 5-speed transmissions and a ross ram style EFI intake system. I want to point out that putting a 351W into a Jaguar XKE that originally came with a six cylinder is not for those that have heart conditions. Luckily there weren’t very many tub modifications needed for the swap, other than the chassis member that supports the front seats where it goes through the transmission tunnel. The engine fitting required extensive modifications to the engine frames to get the engine where we needed it. We actually ordered all new chromoly engine frames to carve up and modify as needed, with new chromoly tubing where needed. Anyway here is how the project looks now. If there is enough interest i will post pictures of the processes up to this point?
I know this is not a “COBRA” but maybe it will give forum members ideas on their own projects and how to accomplish the seemingly impossible? If not, please feel free to delete the post.
