Any registration tips for VT
All,
I have seen some nightmare stories posted here on the site about issues registering in CT and elsewhere. Not just CA.
Or sellers lamenting when deals fall thru because the buyer encounters issues registering in a new state.
I live in VT. Hopefully sooner rather than later, I will join the madness and have a Cobra to register here.
Anyone have any experience registering a Cobra in VT?
Any pitfalls to avoid with VT?

I did it… easy! took 6 wks got my registration and plates, just pay the tax on you car

This was when you were registering your CCX?
Were you registering it in VT for its initial title?
I ask because I am wondering about the potential difference (if any) between an initial title in VT or transferring a title from another state.
Do you have any additional insights?

Brian,
If the car has already been titled in another state, Vermont will take the existing title and VIN at face value. If you are doing a first title and registration from a MSO, then VT is a very friendly and easy state to get this accomplished. Just call the DMV and have them send you the packet for the initial paperwork and follow it to the letter. Don't over think it and then get yourself wound up, forget about what one state or another outside of yours will do down the road.

I am thrilled to hear this. I live in VT. The car will be stored in VT. So, the car will be registered in VT.

Very good counsel. Though I can assure you, there will be no tampering of any kind with my car. Tinkering sure. But negative on the tampering. To me, that sounds like a recipe to turn my dream into a nightmare.

I went into the DMV in Montpelier and went up to the window with a mitt full of papers and the deer in the headlights look from the person behind the window was priceless. She said "what should we call it?" I said "1967 Ford Replica" That's what it's been for 17 years. I love this place!

bill of sale
I didn’t have a MSO, just a bill of sale. VT made it very simple. Getting insurance thru Hagerty was simple… a couple of pictures etc

Any one have any feedback on the VT requirement for a defroster even though its an open top vehicle. That's the only thing in the composite/kit section that seems to be an issue for me. I do have heat though so...

I've only had one inspection station bring it up and refuse to inspect it. I've used 3 others and nobody cares. Just don't mention it !

I purchased a CSX6000 series from the personal collection of Bill DenBeste, who had already registered the car as a 1965 Shelby Cobra.

As Mr. Mustang advised, VT took the previous title and VIN at face value. That was the good part.
The not so good part. Ignoring the Bill of Sale, VT DMV valued the car at nearly ten times the purchase price based on NADA / KBB. So, I was faced with a huge sales tax bill [this is the land of Bernie Sanders after all].
I tried to explain the difference between a 3000 series car and 6000 car. I had reference material from Hagerty etc. Even more, I had the results from the pre-purchase inspection and appraisal. DMV ignored those because the PPI and appraisal were not completed by “a registered VT dealer.” So, my first attempt at registering in VT was a failure since I was not about to pay sales tax on the value of a 3000 series car.
I had to find a VT dealer to appraise the car. I didn’t even know where to start, so I went to the local Ford dealership. The Ford dealer had no idea how to appraise the car and did not want to risk running afoul of the DMV by trusting my documentation. Similar result from the other new car dealerships in my area.
I eventually found a dealer that deals only with classic cars. He understood my situation and was willing to perform the appraisal.
So, armed with an appraisal from a VT dealer, I was able to complete the registration of the car. And I paid my sales tax, which was still considerable. Just nothing what the tax would be on a 3000 car….
A couple of additional details that might interest someone seeking a VT registration and title in the future. VT uses the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) codes for title and registration.

Model: CSX
One other thing which I appreciated. The DMV provided me with a copy of my car’s profile in the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) so that I could verify all the title info.
Again, thank you to everyone on the forum here for their many insights and particularly those here that contributed to this thread. Definitely helped me to proceed with some peace of mind that I knew how to approach the registration process.
