Default Pedal Assembly Originality

Many people on this site try to build their cars as period correct as possible, well my question is "did Shelby Team cars have any modifications to the pedal assembly of their race cars". I am not talking about different size cylinders but other modifications.

Custom steel foot levers/ pedals for throttle and sometimes custom padded brake lever pads is all I recall.

Dan,

That would make sense as it is pretty hard to heel-toe with the stock pedals.

Stock cast aluminum throttle pedals will break fairly easily and are not easy to repair so they don't instantly break again. Custom steel replacements in works racers ended that problem.

Hard stops were something added to chassis in the USA at some point in time and I believe that was good for carburetor throttle shafts and cast aluminum throttle pedals. I have not narrowed down when stops were added but they were standard by CSX2201 the best I can tell. CSX2190 is the earliest unrestored except body color repainting car I have recorded with the Shelby American stop installed. The fact that all chassis CSX2126 through CSX2158 except a few were intended or destined to be completed to variable specifications for various purposes confounds originality questions for that entire chassis number range. Post production (post sale to a customer) modifications to cars from there through CSX2188 confound originality questions on those cars.

Original Shelby American throttle pedal stop from a car with red carpet. The carpet fragment shown got wrapped around the threads and ripped from the car's foot box carpeting during removal.

Same stop assembly with the carpet removed.

Believe or not I have come across several late Cobras with the stop completely removed or cut off with a hack saw. It just so happened that those cars also had broken throttle pedals, damaged throttle linkage systems, and or damaged carburetor throttle shafts. I can not rationalize in any way removing or cutting off the stops.

I ask the question because in the Reincarnation mag article on the 427, 93 inch wheel base Kirkham Daytona Coupe, which shows the pedal box in the magazine but not on the web site article. It is not what the pedal box on CSX-2286 looked like, as I remember it. The pad on the gas pedal was shorter by about an inch and half, it was removed from the bottom of the pad. Below where the cutoff pad ended by about 1" to the top of a 5/16" steel tube which extended out towards the brake pedal about 1 3/4--2" for heal and toe driving. A few weeks ago, I saw a parts supplier was selling a pedal system with this piece as part of their custom assembly, I did not bookmark it and now can not find it as a reference. Just to let you know, all measurements are estimates based on my memory and should be very close to correct.

Reincarnation magazine web site----www.rcnmag.com sign up, they will send you the magazine free and it is a great magazine, well done articles and great quality printing. I didn't realize that the on line version is not as complete as the printed magazine, until I looked for the picture of the pedal assembly on line and it wasn't there but was in the actual magazine version. The article on the Daytona is in the WINTER 2020 magazine but they have all their publications on line. The great thing is that it is FREE.

That WINTER 2020 magazine has an article on the Shelby GR-1 show car with great pictures and an article on building a cowling for your radiator and oil cooler also.

Some of the coupes had removable pedal boxes.
