throwout bearing/slave cylnder?
Hi, I am running a 302 and t5 trans. Would the best thing to use be a hydraulic slave/ throwout bearing? it would allow only two hydraulic lines to be installed.
thanks for your help.

The HTOB died twice in less than 500 miles.
I switched to the traditional master/slave setup and never had another problem.

Using McLeod bolt-on (1300 series) HTOB now.
3 years and 4000 miles running with no problem at all.
Mounted to a McLeod clutch, big input Toploader (1-3/8") and BBF.

Note:
Old 1st generation units were problematic.
The current redesigned model appears to be reliable.
McLeod provides a few spacers to properly shim the HTOB.
I took a measurement and had a single shim machined
as opposed to a stack of smaller ones to get the proper spacing.
1400 series is the slip-on variant.
McLeod has HTOB rebuild kits available.

Repairing/replacing the HTOB is not a problem, its the removing/reinstalling of the tranny/engine to get to it !

Put me in the camp with those who pulled the transmission multiple times to deal with a leaky EARLY HTOB. I switched to a mechanical TOB and clutch fork moved by an externally mounted hydraulic slave cylinder. It worked with no further problems. 351 Windsor with Richmond transmission.

My 30 year old McLeod HTOB still works fine, and no leaks. I do note, however, the new ones seem to be made differently - I think mine's all steel.

Not if you count the likes. I will say the internal ones seem to have a easier petal. Not hard to set up but easy to mess up the set up. Way more work to fix. Higher failure rate due to location. For those reasons alone I would recommend a external set up. I have installed both on different cars so trust me when I say I know what I am talking about.

Newer production cars with manual transmissions use HTOBs with little problem. Many aftermarket HTOBs simply use an o'ring as the seal and durability is poor. I know that the Tilton HTOB uses an actual seal designed for the purpose and the durability should be significantly better.

Most newer production cars use automatics ,also I was talking about tremec transmissions with various clutches all cars were 450 and above hp.
