CSX3042 yellow valve stem caps

Does anyone have a story on the yellow valve stem caps on 3042? This is supposedly the most original CSX. Have not seen them anywhere else.

Goodyear® racing inner tubes in the 1960s were provided with military specification metal valve stem caps like you might also find in some aircraft landing gear wheel systems and with industrial hydraulic accumulator assemblies. Shelby American and Ford Advanced Vehicle used predominately Goodyear brand racing tires and racing duty inner tubes. The bright yellow painted caps on new Goodyear racing inner tubes were common for both organizations and were made by SCHRADER®.

Inner tubes made in America had caps that were marked as being made in the U.S.A., while inner tubes made in England had caps marked with that country of origin.

This "U.S.A." cap below was installed in a new Cobra with Goodyear race tires in 1963.





After initial installation the caps could have been lost during racing or just replaced during routine tire changes as well used race cars from either organization were seen with no caps or plain black plastic caps.

Hi Bubbas, In 1966, I purchase a set of tires and tubes from Penske Racing somewhere in Pennsylvania for my car. They were the Goodyear distributor for racing in the Northeast. They indeed had yellow caps like Dan has pictured though a little different design. Interesting that it would be 7 years before I would purchase my car. I was collecting parts that I knew I would need and could afford as a young fella. The caps were unique and asked for several hand fulls for spares. My caps have a greenish tinge almost like zinc chromate. They are some sort of gold colored metal probably a copper bronze alloy. The style is a little different from Dan's. They have an o ring in the bottom installed probably glued as they can not be shaken out. I am going to end here and begin again. If I write too long the site drops the reply.

Hi there,
As someone who started out working on aircraft, that looks like a fairly bog standard Schrader valve cap used on tire stems and landing gear struts. You should be able to find them from Aircraft Spruce and Specialty co. Try searching valve cap.

Sorry but got sidetracked. Those tires come out for concourse events.. Observers say they didn't know they were reproducing small letter Goodyear Blue Streaks. The tires and obviously the tubes are stored vacuum packed , in absolute climate controlled complete dark storage. The caps are used in landing tires on aircraft. They are tested to 1000's psi to support the pressure surge while landing in both structure and sealing. Renditions are available. In reference to 3042. 3042 has been owned by several G-Ds in our hobby. Each has directed restorations at world class shops through the years. I first observed 3042 in I think the mid 1970's at a shop in Conn. 3042 first met my Cobra on the show field at the Meadowbrook Concours in a Cobra class event that was by special invitation in Detroit. At that meet my original race yellow caps were on bold display with observers asking many questions about the details of several original components of the car including the yellow caps. The crew handling 3042 were asking numerous questions. Remarkable 3042 showed up at the next concourse sporting .
several significant changes. Even one of our prolific contributors here asked about the yellow cap story and requested a source, when he saw my car at the Hershey's Concourse. That would have been of RT422, perhaps even Morgantown Rd just outside of the city of Reading. My wife had worked for the company for a number of years while we were still in the northeast.
