Engine removal on a CSX - enough clearance to leave tranny in?
Is there enough clearance to pull an FE out of a CSX and leave the tranny (TKO) bolted up (supporting the front of it)? Seems like there isn't enough space in front to get it off the input shaft, but thought I'd ask anyway. We removed the tranny last time we pulled the engine.

I think so. We helped Colonel Mike put a 427 s.o. in his CSX back in 2013. I have pictures of the motor above the car ready to install. I think the TKO was in car already.
I'll check with Col. Mike.

Colonel said you have to remove the tranny and bellhousing from inside. Then you can pull the motor.
His CSX is a 6000 series

OK, that's pretty much what I did last time. Just was wondering if I could save myself some steps.
Thanks!

I have 4060 and have done it both ways. If you install the motor and trans (I have a top-loader) at the same time, pull the hood (duh!) and lift the vehicle at the rear. The "downward dog" position of the vehicle allows for a better approach angle. Lower the drivetrain into the engine room with the transmission tail shaft hanging much lower than the engine, then feed it back, raising the tail shaft as you lower the motor and push the drivetrain back and into position.
I found this technique preferable over pairing the engine and trans separately.
Good luck!

Hey Doug, to follow up on Dwight's post I've removed the engine/trans a few times but never as one unit. Someone else may have done so but IMO, there's a little more risk of something going wrong so I just take my time....call it whatever but it's my risk mitigation plan!
Thanks to my not so brilliant engine builder who originally built my SO, I've had the pleasure of pulling my engine last year (first pic). Thanks to Dwight's help this weekend, I was able to get my new and improved engine (second pic) back from a very competent engine builder so now I'm in the process of getting the car back on the road. Since some of this is still very fresh in my mind, I should be able to help out if you have any more questions.

call olthoff
If I were doing it myself I'd separate them just to make it easier.

Ok, thanks guys. I'll pull the tranny like I did last time.

And exactly what is your plan with your engine (and mystery metal) once you have it out of your car?

My first email was to Lykins Motorsports. I even pre-sold the family on a road trip to see the horse farms in Kentucky . BUT, Brent is very busy.
So my plan is to use a local guy that's rebuilt engines for a number of folks in CACC - Simon at Tyson's Automotive Machine in Sterling. He has a full machine shop (not that I'll need it) and is VERY meticulous and has worked on FE's before. He did some work for me and a friend building a 347 stroker for a track car.

Take the pulleys off in the front and the motor will come out.Maybe the water pump too. It's only a few bolts.

I might take a look at that. Pulling the seats, tranny tunnel and tranny is a PITA.
At some point I'll stop whinging and just get on with it.
