touching up the powder coat

With the new driving season almost here, I was wondering if anyone has any tips for touching up chips to the powder coat on the frame of the CSX 6000 cars. From HiTech, so likely the same powder coat on their SPF cars, so any tips there are also welcomed and appreciated.

Any recommendations on preferred products?

My car is 29 years old, so the powder coated frame has needed touch-ups more than once. The powder coat on my frame matches well with black satin spray paint (rattle can). No particular brand, I've used several.

I've also powder coated at the hobbyist level for about 20 years.

Your powder coat's color and finish; gloss, matte or somewhere in between, have to be considered when determining a reasonable spray paint match. Take a guess, buy several paints, and spray something other than your frame as a test, and compare the sprayed piece/s to your frame.

Just hoping to avoid the spray can. Unlike you, I lack the 20+ years of experience and likely the steady hand which accompanies that experience

Unless they have changed, Hi-Tech has always used automotive Paint for their chassis, not powdercoat. Originally they used Imron, but probably changed along with the brand changes made along the way. So, I stand corrected. Rather than powder coat for the CSX frame, HiTech paints the frames.

Does anyone happen to know the paint code that HiTech uses on the CSX frames?

Someone here had the suggestion that I pose the question to Hillbank, who forwarded my question to the factory.

Good news - Hillbank responded to me, but with something considerably more elaborate than a simple paint code.

Less than good news - I have not been able to find a local vendor who can decipher the mixture details for me. Not yet, anyway. Or anywhere here in the U.S.

Maybe someone here will have more luck, so I have posted below what I received from Hillbank.

For reference, I found a supplier on E-Bay that has the basecoat. In Germany

I might have found a potential vendor, Micro Auto Paint in Highland Park, Michigan. They seem to carry and / or mix Glasurit. I will give them a call tomorrow and report back here what I learn.

I first tried the Glasurit locator. Which didn't have anything in the US.

At least BASF has domestic dealers, though so far nothing local to me. But I will keep trying.

Naive of me to think finding the chassis paint for a little touch up would be easy.

And when I do get this sorted out, good chance that I will have more paint than I need. At least initially anyway.

Do you have a sense for how much paint you require for your current project? And maybe how much additional paint you will want to keep on hand for touch ups etc?

If I can find someone to mix up a batch, possibly will amount to enough paint for both of us.

Here is the information I have in my notes: But as you can expect that a "perfect match" is probably not possible

Semi-gloss back Rustoleum spray can. Feather the edges, let it dry and then use a polishing compound to rub in the edges and get rid of the over-spray. Then if you got it too glossy as a result of all that rubbing, a light massage of some #0000 steel wool and with some polishing compound will help blend.

Newer cars can use gloss black (Rustoleum spray) and older cars with age and frames that are NOT waxed regularly (lol) can use the SEMI GLOSS rustoleum for a good match.

Rustoleum gloss black epoxy enamel.
*
Eastwood sells a black epoxy frame paint that is pretty tough and matches fine.
*
Duplicolor semi gloss engine paint.

I will use primer first and then paint so I don’t think I will need very much. I would imagine that a can would be more than enough. I don’t know if I will use a touch up gun or rattle can. I want to get as close to perfect as possible. Thanks for thinking about me

And i hear you, that the perfect match is probably not realistic. One of the reasons why I am trying to start with something close to original. Then hopefully less chance for me to screw it up.

And waxing the frame? Man, something else to add to the To Do list that I had no clue about...

Team effort here. Lots of people on this forum have helped me immensely. Lots. So, if i can do someone a solid, then I certainly will.

But right now, that is a big IF.

I have not yet had much luck, as it seems like the Glasurit 68 line is NOT sold in the US.

I have tried a couple BASF dealers for possible cross reference. Tomorrow, I will try a national BASF service, and then report back what I learn.

And then, if I still cannot source the mixture, then it might be time to try the above advice from Blas. But first, I will try a few more possible sourcing options and update this thread.
