Default 454 SBF - Anyone tried it yet?

Been looking at some short block offerings in the 454 tall deck variety. 454 seems like a dirty "word" when it comes to Fords though. Anyone built one yet?

How do you get to 454 (bore & stroke)?

You could go 4.155 x 4.25 for 460cid

I considered it for my Dart block. Two issues came up while I was thinking about it.

First, the bore is maxed out. If something happens, you have no option except to sleeve the bock.

Second, there were no readily available off the shelf pistons. I found some race only pistons - but the compression was way to high, and so was the price.

JE 4.125" bore pistons and 4.250" stroke 4340 forged Eagle crankshaft...

"This engine produces 643 horsepower at 6100 RPM and 597 ft pounds of torque at 5200 rpm. Torque at 3500 is over 525 ft pounds"

I thought when you stick a 428 FE crank in a 427 FE, you get 454ci. I wouldn't worry about nomenclature.

Sure...what would you like to know?

You can get there with either a 4.100" stroke or a 4.250" stroke.

Pistons for both 4.100" and 4.250" are readily available from Probe, JE, Diamond, Mahle, etc, etc.

They produce a tremendous amount of torque along with a large amount of average horsepower.

A while back I talked with the folks at JE Pistons. You can buy off the shelf pistons with 4.125" bore for only a couple of strokes, and 4.250 was not one of them. On their web site, that still appears to be the case. When I talked with them, they said they could easily make them, but they don't generally stock them. So they had to be special order and custom made = expensive.

Same thing with the Eagle crank. They can do it, but it's a special order. That doesn't seem to affect the price any, though.

I'm not sure what rods you would need, a little shorter than normal, I would think. Eagle doesn't list a package >445 cubes; and that uses a 4.100" crank, and a 4.155 bore.

If you use a Dart block with max bore and stroke, you can get 468 cubes. But the engine is maxed out, the stroke is huge, and the price is even bigger. I thought about it for a while, but then decided not to do it for a variety of reasons - price being one of them.

Pistons are available. Cranks are available. All off the shelf.

With increased stroke, rods get longer. You need a 6.250" or 6.300" rod length depending on the counterweights of the crankshaft and the compression height of the piston.

All prices are the same. The cranks are the same price, rods are the same price, pistons are the same price.

The only issue is that with the 4.250" stroke, the pistons start to get pretty short. However, Probe offers some off the shelf pistons that use a 6.250" rod, which helps a little bit.

If you have to have "exactly" 454 cubic inches, then you can do a 4.125" x 4.250". If you can fudge a few cubes either direction, then there a myriad of ways of getting there. People tend to get caught up in the numbers though.

Jay I have 460SBF, and i have been pleased. Parts are not a problem (as Brent mentioned). You will need to Notch the block (Dart Block).

My point was not that I didn't know what SBF meant, but that 454's, BBF's in this case, have been around a long time. No need to worry about the number 454 in a Ford, in my opinion.

Why not just play with a used detuned Cup Engine with all the good parts already in it?

Some years ago we had a sbf 460 from Bill Mitchel? World Products. There was a thread here on it.Initial problems were all EFI related.
My stock bore Shelby block with 428 crank works out to 452 cu in I believe. Close enough ! All the mfr's always round UP !!!
