Mild steel vs Stainless headers
Does anybody have experience with mild steel headers. Can you ceramin coat them and is it worth it, how long till they will need to be replaced due to rust, and is there any performance lost compared to stainless. I know stainless is superior but is it really worth the extra costs.

Most everyone goes with mild steel and ceramic coat inside and out. Once coated they won't rust and they should last 20 years give or take. Stainless is less commonly used because of the cost as well as tougher to bend if you need a custom job (which is also more frequent with these cars and different motor selections). Stainless will also get hotter than ceramic coated mild steel so you need to think about possible heat soak/thermal issues that may occur with your hood ... my 2 cents.

Thanks, thats good info to know, I was hoping I could just coat the headers along with exhaust at the same time and really didnt want to upgrade and try to bend stainless headers.

I made some recently and had them ceramic coated. Looks really nice and i dont have to worry about them losing their shine like stainless will. I would hate to polish stainless pipes in this configuration.

My primary pipes (headers) are mild steel and now 19 years old. They were ceramic coated from the beginning.
17 years ago I wrapped them with 2" wide Thermo Tec woven insulation tape because of excessive foot box heat. I've re-wrapped them several times in subsequent years so I can attest to their current condition. The pipes are still rust-free and appear to have many years of life left.

My steel headers are 22 years old and no problem, so far. I paint them with VHT every few years.

I don't polish them, I let them tarnish a bit, looks very racy, and the golden color is awesome...

I also found with the thinner wall thickness with stainless, they sound tinny when idling.

When I was at Kirkham, the weight difference between the stainless headers and pipes vs the mild steel headers and pipes alone was worth going with stainless, can't remember the exact weight difference but it was significance...
