New BDR in Texas!

I just bought a new BDR today that should be arriving late next week!

What is the process in TX for new replicas? Do you have to pay sales tax?

A quick search helped my with everything else in the registering process.

Does ford,GM, Toyota, Mazda, Buick pay taxes when they build cars? The second owner, john q public, pays the taxes. You paid taxes while building it.

Register as 2013 assembled vehicle BUT make sure under remarks it says replica 1965 Ford. This exempts you from everything but safety inspection.

Congrats. I will be also going through the registration soon too for my Levy Racing FFR. Have you figured out how to do a temp registration until you have the inspection, etc done? Where are you located? I am in Houston area.

VTR-852 from that an ASE Master Mechanic (rating A1 through A8 and NOT L1) is required to fill in. YES, DMV verifies their certification. This step is noted in the above procedure.

Yes, you will need to weigh your car.

Temporary Registration form: Just fax or email or call they will get it to you in minutes. Choice is 1 day, 72 hours or 144 hours in duration. I went with the one way...its really meant for truck routing for special loads, but DMV said I can use it for the Cobra to go from home, inspection, weigh station, County assessors office. Since they give you your temp/permanent registration at the office, you no longer need the temp registration that got you there:

TIP: READ THE PROCEDURE!!!! It was very helpful. Don't forget pictures of a genuine Shelby (off internet) and your car. Front, side and back of both your car and the car it replicates (shelby). Next pencil tracing of the VIN plate (I also supplied a photo), bill of sale. Last: you will need your check book to pay taxes...if you will have title, they will mail it to your home. Plates will also come later.

Search this forum for the procedure to get titled. Very easy to do right and wrong. If you are in Houston don't worry about temp registration hpd has bigger problems. I blatantly deserved 9 tickets never got one in houston

Thanks for the reply Madmaxx, my big concern is that the BDR receipt says tax:0. I was thinking the state would charge when they saw taxes paid were zero.

It's a roller and a company installed the engine/drivetrain

Maxx- I would like historic plates if possible, is there a route when registering in TX that would allow the car to get historic plates?

Widows son, Thanks for the info on the temp registration. With all the input from you and the others, I think I have everything I need to successfully register on the first try the car once it arrives; should be here in the next month or so...can't wait!

Not sure if you thought through insurance yet. It was a real challenge. I have an exceptional record and a number of underwriters would not go through with it such as Hagerty (?splg?) due to the high risk Cobra's have. That said, I went with Midwest (advertised on this forum) and they were great. The insurance card had '65 on it as well.

I can't stress enough that you read the PDF file I provided a link to above (and again below) and educate yourself. As of March 29, 2012 Cobra replicas will be categorized as a "Custom Car" and you will get a "Custom Car" plate (Page 2 of the VTR 852 form). This means it will be registered as a '65 Backdraft Roadster (in my case).

You can opt for a vanity Custom Car plate (I went with "WIKKID"). They will ask for 3 names in case any are used. However, I found this neat trick of going to:

Luxury Series

and enter some names and see if its available. If it is, then just write it down on the VTR page 2 form. That was how I knew "WICKED was taken". Custom Car plates will allow 6 characters only.

I would suggest you put everything in a nice binder including the PDF files (my tax assessor referenced that document since she was unfamiliar to registering my car):

- Had my inspection sticker placed on the windshield - but no emissions test is nor will be required

- Pencil trace and photo of your VIN nameplate

- Insurance card

- Driver's License

- Photos of your car: Front, Side, Rear

- Photos of the car your car replicates (Shelby off the internet): Front, Side, rear

- Weight certificate

- Bill of Sale (provided by your seller)

- Certificate of manufacture (provided by you manufacturer)

- First time registration form 130-U. This is where you pay your $$$ in taxes for an out-of-state purchase. The County assessor faxed it to my manufacturer/seller and faxed it back (10 min). Warn them in adavnce or have them sign it before registration.

Insurance is a joke. Call the right people. Midwest classic. I am drunk right now, send me a pm Monday I will scan and forward all documentas. You fill your info. Just regulate inspection with green form you already have vin. I get tired of the stupid shr othis forum at times

If you don't mind a little duplication, read below what I posted on another site about my recent experience in registering my FFR Roadster.

I just registered my roadster a couple of weeks ago in Ellis County (Waxahachie). Used the Street Rod approach and it was pretty painless. Preparation is the key. Do not go to the registration office and ask them what you need to do. You may not like the answer. There are several ways to license a vehicle and the Custom/Street Rod approach is new to them. Suggest you go the DMV website (TxDMV - Home), do a search, and get 3 documents:
1.) Motor Vehicle Registration Manual, Section 21.2 - Classic Motor Vehicles and Travel Trailer;Custom Vehicles;Street RodsThe Custom Vehicle and Street Rod portion should be studied carefully.
2.) Registration and Title Bulletin - #004-12 - "Custom Vehicle" and "Street Rod" Program, dated March 29, 2012. Do a search for RBT's. This doc tells you all the steps and documentation you will need.
3.) Frequently Asked Questions about the Custom Vehicle and Street Rod Program - You will find this as an attachment in the RBT's. This document is important in that it states that annual inspection stickers are not required.

After reviewing these docs my approach was:
1. Had inspection performed by ASE certified technician who sighned form VTR-852.
2. Obtained safety inspection sticker - even tho this is not required, I figured the $14.50 was easier than explaining the law to every policeman who stopped me for no safety sticker. Your choice.
3. Obtained certified weight certificate at local truck stop. Should have done this before the safety inspection as the inspector asked what the weight of the car was. He didn't argue when I told him I didn't have it yet, and he left that field blank.
4. Prepared a document package with the following:
a) RTB #004-12 (noted above)
b) FAQ (noted above)
c)Completed VTR-852 (noted above)
d)MSO from FFR
e)Receipt for motor
f) Receipt for Trans
g)Photo of trans S/N
h)VTR-61 Rebuilt Vehicle Statement
i)Tracing of motor S/N and form VTR-301
j)Photo of motor S/N
k)Tracing of frame S/N and form VTR-301
l) Photo of Frame S/N
m)Weight certification
n) Form 130-U Application for Texas Certificate of Title
0) 3 photos of car -front, side, & rear views
p) photo of Shelby Cobra from internet
q) Insurance card

Made of copy of all of the above for my records and went to the auto registration office. I walked in, showed them the document package, and stated I wanted to register and license my vehicle per the Street Rod Approach (showing them the RTB Bulletin and pointing out all of the documents that it references.) The lady said "I wish everyone who came in here was this prepared.", and about 20 minutes later I had my registration sticker and temporary tag. The final tags came 1 1/2 weeks later. During the process I mentioned that I had paid sales taxes, as applicable, on all of the parts as I built the car and stated I didn't feel I needed to pay additional sales tax. She check with someone in the office, agreed with me, and just charged for the registration and title fees. About 100 bucks.
Prior to this I had visited the office on 2 other occasions trying to get a temporary permit so that I could drive the car to the inspection and weigh stations. I got two different answers and no permit. That is when I decided to quit asking questions and to be better prepared for the registration process.

I just completed mine this week. For the safety inspection, I went to the DPS Waiver/Challenge location in Plano. Call ahead for an appointment. Took 30 minutes and was handed an inspection report (replaces the need for VTR-852), window sticker (payment by money order or cashiers check only) and TX DPS emissions waiver #. Follow all the other requirements listed in previous posts and it should go smoothly. I was in and out of the Frisco Tax office in 15 minutes.
