Default texas inspection

I have been getting my cobra inspected at the Plano DSP for years. Last year they told me I have to take it to a regular inspection station, so today I finally got everything back together (from the underhood fire, but that is another story) and went to the local Oil Depot. They said they could not inspect it as a 65 safety only because it had an OBT sticker on it. Looking at the DPS web site they seem to want emissions tests for kit cars. Does anyone have a cobra friendly inspection station that knows the rules?
thanks
Joe B

Does your insurance card show 2006 or 1966 ?

If 2006 you need to get your insurance company to correct it.

Fred is right. First thing is to get the insurance card to read "1966 Cobra Replica" or something similar which establishes to the inspector that you are a replica of a car more than 25 years old.

I had the same response from the Plano DPS Waiver Office this year. "Rick," the inspector who usually does my car, said he is not sure he is supposed to be doing waivers on Cobras and similar replicas any longer.

From reading the new regulations, that is not the whole answer. The regulations now say replicas are supposed to go get corrected titles that reflect the "year representing." Then annual safety inspections are not required. A few people have done it this way recently, not many. I am holding off till the next registration renewal.

If it is registered as a custom vehicle with custom vehicle plates it does not have to have a state inspection according to the "assembled vehicle manual" that the DMV put out. You might have to argue that with the police at some point. My plan is to carry a copy of the manual in the trunk. That's about all that will fit anyways.

Great news it is titled correctly. Great news it only needs safety inspection. Bad news you have to educate the inspection station, good news get your insurance card changed to say 66 and take to inspection station.

Here is a tip for you guys who are having trouble obtaining state inspection. My inspection expired while my FFR Daytona (no muffler, no cats, etc.) was at South First Performance Automotive having IRS retrofitted. I gave my insurance card to Phil, the owner of the shop, and he had one of his technicians drive it over to a friend's garage where the inspection was performed. Talk to your contacts in the hot rod and high performance community. They will know where to find a friendly and knowledgeable inspector.
