Default TKO 600 Improvement?

3rd gear synchro is going on my TKO 600. It has always been a slow, glitchy pig to shift. Has anyone had any luck with a rebuilder who can modify these things to make them shift better. Anyone have any experience with these folks:
WELCOME TO LIBERTYS HIGH PERFORMANCE Thanks for any help.

Liberty is a great company. Or, just have Blykins at B2motorsports help you, he is a Tremec expert, he has a few options to beef up any TKO600, plus he is a great guy to deal with, he has a website with transmission options...

The biggest issue isn't really the blocking rings, it's the finish on the gear cones and synchronizers. With any part, there are tolerances, and some of the TKOs just don't like to be shifted fast, especially at higher rpms. The finish on the cones along with the thrust clearance are usually adjusted on our higher end TKOs, and a new shift finger is installed as well.

Hey Brent, what is the Sure Shift upgrade? Sounds like I'm gonna need that when I get my TKO600 in a few months - or whenever I finish building the motor.

I'm curious also. Have a new TKO600 on the floor waiting on the car to show up. Don't mind paying for a little insurance or piece of mind if the 600 is still having issues.

Sure shift is a surface enhancement to help with quick shifting over 6000 rpm. Most of you all don't need it, just need a good aftermarket shifter.

CRAIG, aka 750

You still crack me up!
My only item on my "Bucket list" is to be able to save enough money and time to come and see you (AND YOUR COBRA OF COURSE), before I start building in the clouds!

Ed, it'd be fantastic to see you over here!

My old Scotty-built Cobra has been sold to a guy who is turning it into a dedicated race car. I'm puttering around in a lovely old Contemporary now with a 427FE that is probably pushing out a modest and gentlemanly 500ish hp at the engine. My TKO600 shifts perfectly, which must only go to prove that I'm in the category of "cruiser" rather than "racer".

There are dozens of Cobra guys over here who would run rings around me on the racetrack, so my ClubCobra username is but a distant memory..for now. (I still have the 800+hp motor and an old Arntz that's crying out for an engine transplant )

I hope you're doing OK, all things considered.

A significant part of the TKO's shifting problems come from the timing Tremec built into the OEM shift rods and their locking mechanisms in the transmission. Liberty has a shift improvement kit that includes the carbon fiber synchros, bronze wear pads for the shift forks and replacement shift rods for the portion of the shifting mechanism internal to the TKO with the timing problems.

The kit has been around for years and users have had good results when they have employed it. I think you would too.

A new shift finger and pads greatly help. The carbon fiber blocking rings are a nicety and not really a necessity. There have been angle issues with the cf rings as there have been production runs where the angle of the ring doesn't match the angle of the gear cone and they wear prematurely.

The biggest issue with the TKO is the production tolerances on the gear cone surface finish. When the synchro can't make friction it's hard for the components to match rpms for a quick shift. The biggest part of the sure shift upgrade is the correction of those surface finishes.

These transmissions also really benefit from an aftermarket shifter and a nice breakin period.

My TKO600 with about 900 miles on it had the 3rd gear falling out when I would engine break. After discovering a rear main seal leak, I pulled the trans and took it to a local shop. 150 bucks later, and the promise of their master mechanic that absolutely nothing was wrong with the trans, it's no longer jumping out of gear. So who knows, the gears looked great inside, and so hopefully the problem was solved.
