Converting GM TKO 600 to Ford
Hi
My Dad and I both have TKO 600s. Mine is behind an FE Contemporary, his is in an Arntz behind a big block Chevy.
I have the 0.64 OD and want the 0.82 OD
He has the 0.82 and wants the 0.64.
Is it as simple as pulling both transmissions, switching the Ford input shaft and bearing retainer with the Chevy part (and vice versa), then bolting the switched gearboxes in place?
Thanks
Craig

I'm no transmission expert but, given the 5th gear assembly part numbers are the same for the Ford and GM variants of the TKO600, it would certainly appear they'd be interchangeable. See page 11 of the Parts Catalog here ==> http://www.tremec.com/anexos/TRPM-TKO-0711_145.pdf

Thanks for the link to the catalog. While I didn't want to switch 5th gear assemblies, my preference was to just change input shafts and bearing retainers, then swap transmissions between cars.
The catalog was helpful; it shows that there are a few other differences - output shaft, extension housing and speedo drive.

It'd be easier just to trade cars.

Tko
I had to have the shaft shortened on my tko to use with a FE, you can also use a spacer between the bell housing and the trans. On a tko you can reposion the shifter and hopefully it will line up with the current hole in the tunnel. You will also need a new GM clutch to match the out put shaft.
Brent can help you with this and has all the parts....

The type of bell housing you have will impact the input shaft length also. Example is Lakewood vs. Quick Time. I believe the Lakewood is shorter and either a shorter input shaft or spacer can be used. Talk with an expert Brent Lykins as mentioned or Mike Forte.
BTW- I'm curious what the rear end gears are in your cars, why the swap?
Good luck,
John

What about both of you buy new TKOs in the configuration that you want and sell your current 'boxes? You might not come out that much out of pocket when you consider the time/hassle/cost/sweat of reconfiguring your current setups to the setups you want.
Another thought...and only half serious.....what if you change to lower profile tyres and your dad changes to higher profile? As an example, 295/50x15 tyres are around 26.8" (680mm) OD, and 275/60x15s are 28.1" (714mm) OD. That's 5% change in your gearing (all gears though) that you could pick up or lose.
Cheers,
Glen

Thanks for the ideas guys. Glen, you're right about the time and effort being offset by just buying a new one and offloading the current one.
I could put a milder camshaft into the FE so it would happily sit under 2000rpm in 5th, but that's no fun at all..!
