I think I need one of these:
Speedometer Gears
I did have one of these lieing around at one stage, but cant see how it connects ...

but this doesn't help me understand how the cable attaches to the gearbox.
I cant see how to connect a speedo drive cable to the gearbox - does anyone have any pics?

First you should determine what top loader you have, i.e. what car did it come out of originally. I used a stock Ford gear that I picked up at the local Ford dealership (<$15). Part number CODD-17271-B.
The eBay link that you posted is for the gear that is internal to the tranny and goes on the main shaft.

Thanks, that's really useful, I had no clue at all on this one.
I'll go and look for some serial numbers and find out.

After a bit of a lay up (house resto project) I am back trying to make the speedo cable work.
Have checked the serial numbers on the case (C5 AR-7006-D H27- so '65 full size Ford) and tail (C70R–7A040-A, so 28 spline 14" 66-69 Fairlane/Mustang/Cougar).
I have found the gear supplied with the Southern Automotive refurbed toploader checked and have a C2Z-17271 16 teeth gear. Have fitted this as per instructions onto the speedo cable, but can't seem to get it to fully locate into the speedo drive hole in the casing - I seem to be 1/4" proud.
Any suggestions? I am reluctant to start applying a hammer. Have so far just pushed with finger pressure and tryig to rotate the other end (not easy single handed).

If the 'O-ring' seal is dry it will be difficult to push in, and forcing it will damage the seal. Lubricate the seal with oil or grease and the try pushing it in with finger pressure. MIT should pop right in, and you should not have to turn the cable.
Good luck.

Great advice. Some LM grease around the aperture and on the 'drum' part of the cable, and then a little bit of gentle wiggling and everything slotted home. Thank you for this - I had been getting ever more frustrated.
Finally I can now get the speedo calibrated - thank you again!
