Default Ford 9 inch rear axle fill/level hole.

So was under the Daytona this morning when it was having its annual MOT (Ministry of Transport roadworthy test) and noticed what appeared to be two oil fill holes on the rear axle. One was on the side of the diff casing and had a hex female recessed plug and the other was on the rear of the casing and had a square male plug. Excuse my ignorance but why two? Thanks.

Some people have added drain ports.
Is the one on the rear casing lower than the fill port?

Some of the Ford castings had plugs and some didn't. They went back and forth between using fill plugs on the casting and the housing.

No it’s not. Wish it was a drain plug. Be more useful!
