Default Help: Just purchased a Backdraft titled as a 2009--NJ registration

So I ended up purchasing a 2009 backdraft and was thinking it would be somewhat easy to title and register the car in NJ.... I see it is not as the title states it's a 2009.

Can anyone help me navigate this registration process? Do I need to get it inspected?

I am now thinking I made a huge mistake in buying this car.

Thanks,
D

What state is the car currently titled in?
Make:
Model:
Year:

Is the car titled with the manufacturers VIN, or is it titled with a state issued VIN?

I'll await your response with the basics above and hopefully guide you in the direction required for your car in NJ.

The make and model are blank?
Can't say I have ever seen an Ohio title like that.

In this case, you'll need to contact the Ohio DMV and have them issue you a letter explaining why this is so. In addition, you'll need to contact Backdraft for information on their cars. NJ will not take the title at face value without at least the letter from the Ohio DMV. Having the information on your car directly from Backdraft (unless you have a copy of the original MSO/MCO) will help explain to the NJ MVS what you have. The letter from Ohio will explain why the Make and Model lines are blank. The NMVTIS 30 may supersede everything, and make it easier to title, as it is part of the National federal database.

As for overall titling, NJ will title it as a 2009 replica, as that is what it is. Since they used the manufacturers VIN, and it is now in the national database, forget about retitling it as anything but what it is....Although, you may be able to get a "collectors" registration (triangular inspection sticker), but that is it. Unless you want to take a ride to the special titles division on State street in Trenton, I suggest the Washington, NJ DMV office, small enough to give you real customer service, knowledgeable enough to spend the time on the phone with the special titles office to steer you in the right direction from there.

Hope you find this helpful.

Geez Bill, this took you several hours to reply to. You must have been out eating and posting food pictures! Best for the new year.

Can't talk about my delay, as there is a NDA in place at this time

Mine is titled in Ohio and has this on the title:

Year: 2000
Make: COBR
Make Description: COBRA
Body Type" 2 DR.
Model: -
Model Description: -

It was originally from California, then bought/sold in Florida, then transferred from Florida to Ohio.

My title is from 2008. They made quite a few changes on the newer versions.

Get the appropriate letter from Ohio DMV/MVS first.........As the car has been previously titled in another state, using the appropriate "BRAND: NMVTIS30 REPLICA" labeling on the title, you should not have to go through a full "enhanced" inspection in Asbury Park or Winslow (Morristown, my favorite out of them all, out of commission for 10+ years). Emissions waivers can be had, negating those concerns as well.
