Default Just thinking out loud??

With the value of a Set of 48's nowdays....and with our fuel for the most part containing 10%-15% alchohol is it worth it to entirely drain a fuel system during the off season to avoid corrosion? Perhaps better to purchase a few gallons of RACE GAS without alchohol and put into an empty tank?? The fuel in the carbs would evaporate regardless? So many choices

I haven't used it so I can only offer what the ad's say. Driven Oil is promoting their new product "Carb Defender" that supposedly counter-acts the ethanol/water issue.

I am toying with the idea of adding it to my tank when the car goes to storage.

Rick, We both being here in Northern California, I haven't experienced the corrosion issue, But then again I tend to run it dry when I know it's going to sit long term (fuel pump and the carbs). I was planning to pull apart my carbs for the winter anyway just for R&R.

Only if it would start raining...Oh, it's another nice day today for a drive.

Since there are no rubber diaphragms in the carb, I wouldn't be overly concerned with alcohol related problems.

I've spent a lot of time analyzing this issue when I had a vintage motorcycle repair and restoration shop full time. From my observations the only verifiable problems with gasohol (E10) came about when the fuel was allowed to sit over 10 weeks. At that point. There was some separation in the fuel that was detrimental to rubber parts of the fuel system that were old to begin with. Other than that, over a period of many years and thousands of engines, I have not seen one case of E10 related carb problems.

If draining the fuel from the carbs and gas tank is not possible (and why not ?) when the vehicle will be sitting for 3 months or longer, a can of Stabil will do wonders to keep the gas viable.

These photos are not E10 related, the owner of this Yamaha XS1100 used only "pure" gasoline. He just let it sit way too long. But they are too juicy not to pass along. As you can see, gasoline does not always "just evaporate" without leaving something behind.

Rick,

I don't have webers but I use stabil in my 69 and also in all of my lawn & garden equipment and so far I have never had an issue. I also go down where I buy my racing gas and get 10 gallons of 93 octane non leaded without any of the ethanol in it to use with the lawn equipment. But with the drought and fires I may never have to use a lawnmower again.

One person on our site did have his webers mess up and when he took the car in to a shop they found that one of the butterflies wa so corroded it wouldn't move. Now he is back East so I don't know what their gas is like or what the whole story is on that.
