These are true Melanesian dugouts---note: no outriggers on the local coastal types. Shot is right off the coast of Tanambogo (dead center) and Gavutu (right) islands----looking WNW toward the larger mass of Tulagi Island (above and behind Tanambogo). This group of islands is 20 mi. north of Guadalcanal and was actually the site of a very bloody landing, 7 August, 1942..
