Here (from a former DD weaps officer) are a couple of MYTHS about Iowa-class* BBs. MYTH #1: they're good for 32 knots. TRUTH: Nope, closer to 34 kts. That's almost 40 mph!!! MYTH #2: their main armament----those 16-inch rifles---could "lob" a shell over 24 miles. TRUTH: with a muzzle-velocity of almost 3000 fps, most of their fire under 22,000 yds. (11 miles) was nearly FLAT TRAJECTORY--not "lobbing"! Full elevation (a little under 45 deg. El.) range was well over 66,000 yds. (33 miles). Later (ahem) "mods" to projectiles, propellants, etc. yielded much more. Much. "Classified", o'course.
*ships take their class names from the first one of that design to be launched
